Sustainable & comfortable travel

1

Travel has many positive aspects

Our mission is to shape the future of sustainable travel — showing you how comfortable and joyful it is to travel without harming the environment!

If we take the step to make our travel behaviour sustainable together, we add an important piece to the puzzle of globally beneficial travel!

Travel is and remains an important part of our lives. It strengthens intercultural dialogue, helps us understand one another globally, and broadens our horizons. Tourism is also one of the most important economic sectors for many countries, creating jobs and even helping preserve nature — which is why it matters for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Visitors’ interest in cultural and natural heritage can convince decision-makers to revitalise those areas, and revenue can fund initiatives that protect nature and culture.

2

The way we travel today harms the environment

Mass tourism is especially damaging: many people travel to the same regions at the same time and overload the environment. In the Maldives, about 3.5 kg of waste is generated per guest per day. Roughly 75–96 kWh of energy and 350 L of water are consumed per traveller, while the average German household uses about 3 kWh and 130 L respectively. Against the backdrop of global warming and climate change, we need to act now and change travel behaviour worldwide.

What to consider when choosing accommodation

Finding your way through the label jungle of more than 150 sustainability certificates helps you decide which aspects of sustainable management matter most to you. Don’t let all the improvement options overwhelm you — treat them as opportunities to innovate, not a burden. Focus on specific areas first, then apply what you learn step by step. Before you search for accommodation on our platform, take a minute to reflect on what matters most for your trip; it will help you prioritise results. Our ChargeHolidays Dreamcatcher explains what hotels can do to improve their sustainability management. On site, talking to staff and sharing ideas counts — when hundreds of guests raise sustainability topics, change follows.

Changing your own behaviour

ChargeHorizons doesn’t only offer a booking platform, coaching, and assessments for accommodations — we also invest in education. We want everyone to know how to adapt their behavior to support our mission and a better future.

More and more people are flexible about where and when they vacation. If you are not tied to school holidays or exams, try travelling when fewer people are on the road. That helps the environment and increases your chances of a more exclusive, adventurous trip. Get inspired by landscapes away from typical hotspots and places you have not considered yet. Already travelling for work? Try to combine meetings smartly — maybe add holiday days or a workation so the journey is worth it.

After choosing a sustainable region and stay, you can support social and environmental progress. For example, we partner with WheelMap so you can help people with disabilities travel more comfortably. With wildplastic we encourage recycled bags and picking up a little litter along the way. A vegan holiday? First trip in an EV? A plastic-free challenge? Travel is a great moment to try something new — maybe you will bring habits home.
