A hotel submits consumption data — energy, water, waste, paper, cleaning chemicals — and is benchmarked against other properties of its type in a comparable climate. The data is verified by an external auditor, and the certification level rises with the number of consecutive years the property has kept reporting. It is the scheme most likely to tell you something quantitative about a stay.
Because it benchmarks against similar properties, a resort can be certified for being efficient relative to other resorts while still consuming heavily in absolute terms. The entry levels also reward the act of measuring rather than any particular result, so a first-year certification says a hotel is counting, not yet that it is doing well.
